TPACK/SAMR

TPACK

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is a framework that helps you understand the role of technology in teaching.  (Koehler & Mishra, 2009).
  • Content Knowledge (CK) – Content Knowledge is WHAT you are teaching.  It’s all the facts you know about the subject you are covering and how you know it.  CK is different from grade level to grade level - content course to content course.  Teachers in LBUSD know their content and they know how to enhance it!
  • Pedagogical Knowledge (PK) – Pedagogical Knowledge is  HOW you deliver instruction.  It is your excellent teaching practices.  PK is what is discussed around the teacher’s lounge at lunch !  It’s classroom management, differentiation, assessments, next steps, and knowing how to reach your students. It’s the SMPs, the CSTPs, and the methods employed to ensure student achievement!
  • Technological Knowledge (TK) – Technological Knowledge is understanding and working with current technology, tools and resources. It is “understanding information technology broadly enough to apply it productively at work and in everyday life… [and] being able to continually adapt to changes in information technology." (Koehler & Mishra, 2009)
Understanding that our LBUSD teachers are skilled in Content Knowledge and Pedagogical Knowledge - the development of teachers' Technological Knowledge is what we at the Ed Tech Department are working to support.  Technology access and application is happening so quickly that it can be difficult for many to keep up!  Our aim is to help teachers find the tools they will find most useful and efficient to infuse into their strong understanding of content and pedagogy.
We recommend taking a look at the TPACK plan to the left.  It’s not something you need to fill out all the time, but more of a way to think about technology.  It will help if you do fill it out a couple times because then it will help you to see other ways you can add technology both to your delivery and to student work.  There are a couple of examples there.
It’s okay to go slow!  However, know that education is a dynamic field and it’s time to step in and learn about how you can adapt professionally.  TPACK will help you begin transforming the classroom in ways that will give your students the skills they need RIGHT NOW and for their future. Want to know more?  Visit www.tpack.org
